Academic and Administrative Leadership Development Program
Sample Format for New Initiative

  1. Name of initiative (Give your new initiative a descriptive title.)
  2. Person responsible for initiative (State your full name, title, school, department, full mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address.)
  3. Planning unit (school or university) and goals of the unit (Illustrate that your new initiative is congruent with the mission of the University by comparing its goals with those of your school, department, or other administrative component in which you work and to which it will contribute.)
  4. Summary (Provide a one-page summary of your initiative, iterating the need being addressed and rationale on which the new initiative is based. Iclude clearly stated goals and activities to be carried out to achieve your objectives.
  5. Program description (Describe in greater detail what you provided in the summary, i.e., in item #4.)
    1. Background
    2. Objectives
    3. Activities (include a timeline)
    4. Performance measures
  6. Significance (In a paragraph, describe the potential importance of your new initiative - the "gap", void, deficiency, or shortcoming within our university setting that will be filled through the successful completion of your project.)
  7. Budget (Provide a budget, clearly defining how you plan to spend up to $3,000 that President Low will dedicate to support your new initiative. Your handling of this section is important because it reflects the capacity to plan and care for an important University resource that will be placed under your stewardship.)

Remember, "written reports have purpose only if read by the king". Although the written description will be your own personal plan, the idea is to communicate and market what you are planning. Therefore, be as concise as possible, but consistent with a clear and exciting description that compels the reader to perk up and take notice.
