Bryant Boutwell, Dr. P.H.

Associate Vice President for Accreditation and
International Programs

Dr. Bryant Boutwell was named Director of Institutional Accreditation for The University of Texas Health Science Center in September 2007. In this capacity, he works with the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs to oversee the process of SACS reafirmation for 2010. In addition, he is the first holder of The John P. McGovern, M.D. Professorship in Oslerian Medicine and teaches medical communications, ethics and professionalism at the Health Science Center's McGovern Center for Health, Humanities and the Human Spirit.

From 1993 to 2006 Dr. Boutwell served as Associate Dean for Community Affairs and Professional Education at the UT Medical School in Houston and in that capacity oversaw communication programs, Continuing Medical Education, and Alumni Affairs along with Teaching and Admissions responsibilities. A former news journalist, he has written award-winning newspaper columns, radio programs, and videotape presentations including scripts narrated by Walter Cronkite. In recent years, he has published a history of the UT Medical School at Houston and the Texas Medical Center. Sales from that book support the Boutwell/McGovern endowed scholarship fund to assist medical students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dr. Boutwell has journalism and biology degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health degree from The University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston. Prior to joining the UT Medical School in Houston, he was at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where he served in communications and as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. Additionally he was a faculty member in the Canter Center's Division of Cancer Prevention where he served as principal Investigator on research projects funded by the National Cancer Institute.

During his three decades in the Texas Medical Center he has also served as senior communicator for the Texas Heart Intitution, Texas Children's Hospital, and Saint Luke's Episcopal Hospital as well as Director of Public Affairs for the Texas Medical Center.

A member of the American Osler Society he is also a former board member of Leadership Houston and Active in international mission trips that have taken him from Alaska to Siberia in service of community needs. He is married to Lana Peralta and has three daughters, Brittany, Brooke, and Mae.
