What is Internal Medicine? |
Internal Medicine is a field of medicine that focuses on
providing care for patients in every aspect of their life. Internists
tend to patients in their office or clinic for routine checkups,
followups, and scheduled diagnostic appointments; in the hospital when
patients become hospitalized; and in nursing homes or rehabilitation
centers when the need arises. Often, physicians from other specialties
call upon them to serve as consults for patients whose treatment
involves managing difficult medical problems.
Internists are well-educated on conditions affecting the
entire body and their treatments. Whether managing therapies for
chronic illnesses or diagnosing acute syndromes, physicians practicing
internal medicine possess a powerful understanding of the complex
interactions that affect a patient's overall health.
