"The Vision and Voice of Women in Medicine since 1915"
In 1915, at a time when female physicians were underrepresented, Dr. Bertha van Hoosen founded the American Medical Women's Association. AMWA was established to provide a voice for women's health and to promote the advancement of women in medicine, which it continues today, more than 90 years later.
Our local chapter is dedicated to fulfilling AMWA's missions in a variety of ways. Our lunchtime meetings feature female physicians addressing issues such as how to balance your personal life and professional career, how to maintain your professionalism in medicine, how to attain a competive residency, and more. Because these topics transcend genders, WE WELCOME MEN! Free lunch is provided for all members, and WE DON'T SERVE PIZZA!!!
Additionally, we're rolling out an all new fundraiser this year, the "2008 Mr. UT Med Man Pageant," to benefit our service projects. Along with this new fundraiser, we're also incorporating a new service project with a local battered women's shelter and a new shadow program for all AMWA members with female physicians from several specialties. We're continuing our annual "Save the Tatas" bake sale and Race for the Cure service project, and we're co-sponsoring a play with the McGovern Center highlighting the life of the first U.S. female physician, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, M.D. With your membership to AMWA, you become a member of the newest organization at UT-Houston, Alliance for Diversity in Culture, "ADC." We anticipate an awesome year!
