Compassionate Care While You Sleep

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Memorial Hermann Hospital continue a tradition of excellence in solid organ transplantation, with MHH regularly being the most frequent organ-recovery site in the country.

Liver: Approximately 50 transplants performend per year, >100 patients waitlisted and >20 referrals per month. Residents are invited to monthly CME events and will assist in the preoperative screening process for potential candidates.

Renal: Approximately 100 transplants are performed per year, including live donor and laparoscopic assisted donation, with additional cases performed at the Texas Heart institute (THI), a popular anesthesia rotation during the CA-2 and/or CA-3 year. More than 500 patients are waitlisted with ± 20 referrals per month.

Pancreas: Approximately 10 pancreas transplants per year are performed with anticipated increase with a newly recruited surgeon (50 patients waitlisted).

Heart and Lung: 30–35 heart and lung transplants are performed yearly at the Texas Heart Institure (see above for rotation details).

Intestine: We have recently started an intestinal transplant program, with two performed and two patients waitlisted.
