Obstetric Anesthesia
Compassionate Care While You Sleep
Approximately 4,000 deliveries per year are performed at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. 80-85% of these patients receive anesthetic management, including general, spinal and/ or epidural anesthesia. Residents begin their training in OB anesthesia in their second year, with an initial emphasis on basic regional techniques for our large population of laboring patients. In addition, residents are trained to manage a great number of high risk maternal-fetal patients. Examples might include pregnancies complicated by cardiac disease, systemic autoimmune disease, bleeding dyscrasias, hypertensive disease, and fetal abnormalities. Two residents and one attending anesthesiologist cover the OB floor each day, with one resident and one attending covering the floor each night. Fourth-year medical students are also invited for week-long rotations in obstetric anesthesiology.
