Compassionate Care While You Sleep

The UTHSCH Department of Anesthesiology offers a regional rotation to all residents. Each month four residents are exclusively assigned to regional anesthesia; one PGY-2 and one PGY-4 at Memorial Hermann Hospital, one PGY-3 at Methodist Hospital, and one PGY-4 at LBJ Hospital. Additionally, we offer a PGY-5 or fellowship annually. One of 10 attendings specializing in regional and orthopedic anesthesia (Drs. Didier Sciard, Mahammad Hussain, Sara Guzman-Reyes, Erikka Limbrick Washington, Nina Singh, and Glorimar Medina-Rivera) is in charge of the dedicated 'block room' and provides supervision to the residents and fellow performing procedures. Dr. Maria Matuszczak, pediatric anesthesiologist, provides expertise in pediatric regional anesthesia.

Memorial Hermann Hospital is one of the largest Level One trauma centers in the nation, thereby allowing this regional program to emphasize all aspects of regional anesthesia. The residents are exposed to various types of peripheral nerve blocks including the use of ultrasound, as well as placement of indwelling catheters for postoperative pain management, for both inpatient and outpatient surgeries.

The Regional Anesthesia service also provides acute pain management consults for adult and pediatric orthopedic patients.

Finally, our department organizes an annual Regional Anesthesia meeting, with the most recent "Updates in Upper Extremity Nerve Blocks" held at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Galveston TX, in October.
