Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship
A twelve-month program in partnership with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital
The goal of our 12 month program is to provide the trainee with a comprehensive experience to allow for acquiring skills and knowledge necessary to provide the most excellent care for all children during the perioperative period.
Our fellowship program is ACGME accredited and offers a variety of clinical experiences, in general pediatric operating rooms (7 months), in pediatric cardiac operating rooms including pediatric cardiac cath lab (1-2 months), in the pediatric intensive care unit( 1 month), on the pediatric acute pain service (1 month) , and in pediatric regional anesthesia or research (1 month choice).
During the general pediatric anesthesia rotation the fellow will gain experience in the management of infants and children with congenital anomalies, major orthopedic surgery, organ transplantation, neurosurgery, ENT surgery, craniofacial surgery and routine pediatric cases. Additionally the fellow will be exposed to anesthesia and sedation for children undergoing diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is a level one trauma center; a center for fetal surgery (Texas Fetal Center) and has a neonatal intensive care service with 118 beds. The fellow will be exposed to a variety of very ill, injured, and premature children.
Our faculty, fellowship trained or equivalent, not only provides excellent patient care but also creates a friendly learning environment.
In addition to the clinical exposure the fellow will participate in the pediatric didactic lectures, in the Anesthesia Department’s weekly Grand Rounds, the pediatric Journal Club, and facilitating resident education. There are multiple clinical research opportunities the fellow will be able to choose from and participate in.
There is a strong training of pediatric regional anesthesia for children of all ages and sizes, single shot blocks, and continuous blocks with placement of catheters, central and peripheral nerve blocks.
Upon successful completion of the rotation, the fellow will be able to:
- Perform pre-anesthetic evaluation of pediatric patients requiring anesthesia care
- Provide anesthesia for pediatric patients, ASA 1 to 5, undergoing all types of surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures
- Evaluate and treat acute pain in pediatric patients, including multimodal treatment plans and invasive regional anesthesia procedures
