Dr. Jacques E. Chelly

Dr. Jacques E. Chelly received his medical degree in 1976 from Necker-Enfants Malades Medical School in Paris, France. In 1985, he earned a PhD at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas and later went on to earn an MBA there in 1992. After a residency in Broussais Hospital in Paris, Dr. Chelly became a Visiting Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Houston. He went on to work at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he quickly worked up the ranks to become Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Pharmacology. He joined the department of Anesthesiology at UT at Houston in 1992, as a full Professor with tenure and Director of Clinical Research of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He developed the Regional Anesthesia and Acute pain service for the department of Anesthesiology and was named the Director of Orthopedic Anesthesia and Director of the International Center for Regional Anesthesia Research in 1997. In 2000, he was presented with an award for Excellence in Surgical Pain Management.

Dr. Chelly join the University of Pittsburgh in 2002 as a Full Professor of Anesthesiology (with tenure) and Orthopedics, Vice Chair of Clinical Research and Director of Orthopaedic Anesthesia and Director of Acute Pain at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. His current appointments Academic appointment include: Professor of Anesthesiology (with tenure) and Orthopaedic Surgery, Vice-Chair for Clinical Research, Director of the CA-3 Regional Anesthesia-Acute Pain Rotation Director at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Director of the Regional Anesthesia Fellowship , Director of the Regional Anesthesia Fellowship, and Director of Division of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Interventional Perioperative Pain Service. His Clinical appointment include: Director of the Acute Interventional Perioperative Pain Service at UPMC Shadyside and Presbyterian Hospital and Director of Orthopaedic Anesthesia at UPMC Shadyside hospital. In addition to these appointments, Dr. Chelly serves as an attending anesthesiologist at UPMC Shadyside. Dr. Chelly has published 157 peer-reviewed articles, 30 letters, over 280 abstracts, 5 books and 14 chapters. He has given over 200 lectures in National and international meeting, presented the result of his research at over 145 National and International meetings.

Dr Chelly has been involved with over 120 sponsored clinical trials. He is currently the principal investigator of 4 sponsored clinical trial and one NIH/NIDCR Whole Genome Association Study.

Simon Gelman, MD, PhD, FANZCA

Simon Gelman, MD, PhD, FANZCA was born and grew up in the Soviet Union, Leningrad; emigrated to Israel in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War. In 1976 moved to Cleveland, Ohio in the United States. In 1978 moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he finished his residency in anesthesiology in 1979 and became the chairman of the department in 1989. Since 1992 until 2002 was chairman of the department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. At the present time he continues working as a full-time faculty member including clinical work. He was President of SAAC, Morton Society, Academy of Mentors in Anesthesiology and held other positions within different organizations in the specialty. He has more than 130 visiting professorships, including close to a dozen of named lectures, and more than 200 publications. He has been an editor of major anesthesiology journals. He is an honorary member of Israeli Society of Anesthesiologists and Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He has a fellowship and named lecture at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and two endowed chairs in his name (one in the University of Alabama in Birmingham and another at Harvard Medical School).

Dr. Michael Ramsay

The Future of Academic Medicine Is In Professionalism” and “Liver Transplantation / Portopulmonary Hypertension

Dr. Ramsay is Chief of Service in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.  He is a clinical professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School with a degree from The London Hospital Medical College at London University.  Professor Ramsay has published over 260 articles, textbook chapters, and abstracts in the field of anesthesiology and has delivered more than 150 invited presentations and lectures at conferences, seminars, and symposia worldwide.  His current research includes the role of nitric oxide in cardiac surgery and lung and liver transplantation, and physiologic considerations during liver transplantation.

Dr. Elizabeth Behringer

Airway Management

Elizabeth Behringer is an anesthesiologist intensivist from Cedars Sinai, San Diego. She trained at MGH in Boston. She is currently the President-Elect of the Society for Airway Management. Dr. Behringer has written many articles and publications regarding management of the difficult airway. She is frequently invited presenter at Grand Rounds, workshops, and associations such as the ASA, SAM, and SAMBA. Dr. Behringer is our first Joseph C. Gabel Visiting Lecturer.

Dr. Roberta Hines

Cardiovascular Pharmacology

Dr. Roberta Hines joined the faculty at the Yale University School of Medicine as an instructor in 1982 and rose to a full professorship in 1995. She became Chairwoman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Chief of the Anesthesiology Service at Yale-New Haven Hospital that same year. She has served on numerous University, hospital and national committees. She has served as director of the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. Hines' work as a clinician earned her recognition as one of the "Best Doctors in America" 1997-1999 and "Best Doctors in Northeast United States" 1999-2000. She is the author of over 150 publications and is currently the senior editor of the forthcoming 10-volume "Requisites in Anesthesiology." Much in demand as a speaker, Hines has given over 200 presentations nationally and internationally, and has held over 50 visiting professorships. Her professional affiliations include election to the Academy of Anesthesiology and the Association of University Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Fred Shapiro

Safe Anesthesia for Cosmetic Surgery

Dr. Fred Shapiro is an instructor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical College and is a staff physician with the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine Unit of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He has written numerous books, including the Manual of Office Based Anesthesia Procedures. He completed his residency at Boston University Medical Center, and completed a Pediatric Fellowship at Boston Children's and a Pain Fellowship at MGH.
