Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology

Conference Information

Course Description

There will be a brief orientation to the simulation equipment and then participants will partake in a series of simulated events during a guided approach of 6–8 hours of instruction. These events will include significant CRM hemodynamic instability, significant hypoxemia, and other difficult patient care situations. Teamwork and communication will be key during these events. Each TRM participant will be required to take a turn in the “hot seat” as the main decision maker for a minimum of one simulation event during the class. The other participants will fill in as other roles as needed. After each case, there will be time allotted for debriefing. This is the only time that the performance of participants will be discussed. The course is for experiential learning in order to stimulate improvement. There is no grade assigned, nor is there a formal evaluation given.

Course Objectives

  • Simulation aimed at enhancing clinical skills and patient safety for the participants
  • Identify individual barriers to effective communication
  • Improve teamwork
  • Learn steps to manage crises in the OR
  • Meet ABA/ASA requirements for board certification
  • Learn and integrate crisis resource management into your clinical practice
  • Learn and integrate team resource management into your clinical practice
  • Practice critical airway management skills in pig trachea lab

Please refer to the ASA’s Simulation FAQ for any questions. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact Jonetha Davidson, 713.500.6271.
