Recognizing
that anesthesia is a difficult process for parents, providing expert,
compassionate care to our pediatric patients is our priority at The
University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. The pediatric
anesthesia program is devoted to the preoperative, intraoperative and
postoperative care of the pediatric patient. This subspecialty involves
all facets of the surgical spectrum including but not limited to general
pediatric surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, pediatric urology, pediatric
ophthalmology and pediatric neurosurgery. We also have an active pediatric
craniofacial service. Anesthesia services for the pediatric patient in
locations outside of the operating room such as the Neonatal ICU, Cardiac
Catheterization Lab, MRI suite, CT scan and GI lab are provided as well.
This exciting subspecialty
allows residents to develop the clinical skills necessary for the care
of the neonate, infant, and toddler. In conjunction with Memorial
Hermann Children’s Hospital, a wide range of cases is performed
on a daily basis. The volume of cases is expanding and soon, separate
pediatric operating rooms with a separate pediatric PACU and DSU will
open. A pediatric anesthesia fellowship is being developed as well.
Faculty:
Faculty
members in the pediatric anesthesia section are either fellowship trained
in pediatric anesthesia or have many years of experience in the care of
critically ill infants and children. Each member of the pediatric call
team is dedicated to the care of the pediatric patient. Many of the faculty
members are invited to lecture on various aspects of pediatric anesthesia
and are actively involved in research. 24 hour pediatric anesthesia coverage
is provided for cases at Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital for
children less than 6 years of age or for those patients with multiple
medical problems. Current members of the pediatric anesthesia section
include Oscar Ghelber MD, Samia Khalil MD, Maria Matuszczak MD, Douglas
Maposa MD, Mary Rabb MD,
(director).
Didactics
A pediatric anesthesia
manual is available for each resident. Also during your pediatric rotation,
reference books are available for you to read. Didactic lectures are held
during the year to assist with your learning experience. Questions and
discussion concerning the cases is encouraged. Each resident is evaluated
at the end of his/her pediatric rotation.
