A Word from the Program Director

Brian.L.Marasigan, M.D.Welcome to the University of Texas Medical School at Houston Anesthesiology. We hope this will provide you with an insight into our residency program and allow you access to our residents, faculty and staff should you have more in depth questions. We especially encourage correspondence from medical students throughout the United States who are interested in all that we have to offer.

Our residency is one of the largest Anesthesiology residencies in the US with 72 accredited clinical anesthesia positions. We offer approximately 24 positions each year. In the past five years we have completely filled our available Match positions and gained recognition from the ASA for both filling one of the largest programs in the country and being consistently in the top five programs in the nation in medical student recruitment to the specialty of Anesthesiology. Annually, we have 20-30 students out of a graduating medical school class of 180-200 who choose Anesthesiology as a profession—a record of which we are very proud!!

Our program has gained immense popularity within the past several years: Memorial Hermann Hospital is one of the few private hospitals with a Level 1 Trauma Center in the US. It is located in Houston, the fourth largest city in the nation and in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world! Truly, you could complete all ABA requirements for an Anesthesiology residency in Memorial Hermann alone. However, our residents also rotate at Texas Children's Hospital, Texas Heart Institute, LBJ Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. We have sub-specialty rotations including, but not limited to; pediatric anesthesia, cardiovascular anesthesia, regional anesthesia, thoracic anesthesia, advanced airway management, and research!

UT Anesthesiology offers fellowships in and cardiovascular anesthesia, critical care medicine, pediatric anesthesia, and regional anesthesia. Extra-curricular activities of our residents include active participation in state and national medical and anesthesiology societies, mentoring of students both in the OR and through the student organized Anesthesia Club, monthly specialty journal clubs, and faculty-resident get-togethers. Other extra-curricular activities include the annual (or semi-annual) faculty vs. residents sporting events — always good for a few laughs and a lot of great pictures!

Good luck in your search for an Anesthesiology program - we hope to hear from you soon.
