 WHO MAY APPLY

Prospective candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Successful completion of at least one year of graduate study (in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience or related disciplines) or successful completion of at least one year of residency in Neurology or Psychiatry.

  2. Evidence of good academic standing.

  3. Sufficient knowledge of English - the language of instruction in the Institute.

  4. Evidence of compatibility between the applicant's interests and goals and the instruction offered at the Institute.

        HOW TO APPLY
    1. Check the course descriptions, faculty, and course schedule and choose two or more courses totalling 40 instruction hours (either two 20-hour courses, one 20-hour and two 10-hour courses, or four 10-hour courses). You may audit as many courses as you wish with the professors' permission, once you have been accepted into the Institute. At that point (or once you arrive in Xylocastro) you may make these arrangements with each professor and notify Dr. Kosmidis who will be in Xylocastro so that your participation in these optional courses is acknowledged. However, to qualify for the fellowship ($1000 or $1500) and receive credit, you only need to select courses totalling 40 instruction hours.

    2. Provide your advisor (or supervisor) this email address Susan.V.Fuller@uth.tmc.edu and ask him/her to write and email a detailed recommendation letter on your behalf NO LATER THAN JANUARY 20th, 2003.

    3. Download a Microsoft Word version of the application form by clicking here. Complete it and email it to Vanessa Fuller, at Susan.V.Fuller@uth.tmc.edu NO LATER THAN JANUARY 20th, 2003. Click here if you would like to see an example of a correctly filled out application form. To download a Rich Text Formatted (.rtf) version of the application click here.   Save the document and then open it in your word processing program to convert the file from Rich Text Format to your own word processing program.

A very important part of the application you should complete with care is the "personal statement" expressing your academic goals, your reasons for applying for this fellowship, your expectations and the rational for the particular course selection you have made. Provided that these two items (the recommendation letter, and the application form including your personal statement) are received in time, your application will be evaluated by the Executive Committee on the basis of the folowing criteria.

        SELECTION CRITERIA
The Executive Committee will rank order the applicants and select the 75 highest ranking applicants on the basis of the following criteria:

    1.  Academic qualifications (as reflected in the personal statement, and the rest of the information in the application form and vouched for by the recommendation letter).

    2. The stated competence in the English language, possibly assessed through a telephone interview (so please do not forget to provide, in the appropriate entry of the application form, telephone numbers where you may be reached by a Committee member).

    3. The match between your stated goals and interests, as expressed on your personal statement, and what the Summer Institute has to offer.

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS AND NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES
Selected applicants (as well as those not selected) will be notified through e-mail no later than FEBRUARY 15th, 2003. (So please give us an e-mail address in the application form.) Those selected will be asked to respond within 10 days, again by e-mail to Susan.V.Fuller@uth.tmc.edu and state whether they will accept the Fellowship. It is important to do so because if one does not plan to attend the Institute, or does not notify the Committee of that decision, one is vacating one of the 75 positions and is providing the opportunity for the next highest ranked applicant to be selected as Fellow and attend the Summer Institute.

Your first choice for the required courses (totalling 40 instruction hours) will be implemented unless more than 25 people wish to attend the same course. In that case, priority will be given to those with higher ranking. In the extremely unlikely event that your first choice in courses can not be implemented, your second or third will (which is why it is important to provide, in the appropriate entry of the application form, three sets of courses reflecting your first, second and third choice).

Upon receiving your confirmation of acceptance you will be registered for the courses and be considered a Fellow of the Summer Institute.

The status of a Fellow entails the following:

  1. You will receive tuition-free instruction in the required courses and all other courses you may arrange to audit.

  2. You will receive a stipend of $1000 (or $1500 if you travel to Xylocastro from countries outside Europe and countries not bordering the Mediterranean) to help you with your expenses.

  3. Upon successful completion of the required courses (totalling 40 hours), you will receive a certificate to that effect as well as a separate certificate for each specific course you completed.

Note that although successful completion of the course is not a condition for receiving the stipend, attending these courses is such a condition.

Note also that you are expected to make your own travel and lodging arrangements (see Venue), but please notify Vanessa Fuller if you intend to be at the Athens International Airport on July 22nd for her to arrange for free ground transportation for you (and your companions). She will then give you specific instructions as to where and how to meet the bus that will take you to Xylocastro. If you arrive in Greece on different dates (before July 22nd) or in different cities, you will have to come to Xylocastro at your own expense. Click here for instructions as to how to get from Athens to Xylocastro, and for maps of the area.
