Xylocastro is situated on the north coast of Peloponnese in a distance of about 75 miles from Athens and within a small distance from the best known archaeological sites of southern Greece (Olympia, Delphi, Mycene, Korinth, Epidavros).  During the summer, the city organizes and offers concerts and plays in the open theater by the beach to the public, free of charge.  The city also operates athletic facilities (tennis courts, beach volleyball, basketball courts, soccer) to which the members of the institute will have free access.  As for the necessities of the work of the institute, the town government will provide, again free of charge, municipal building spaces for classes and the necessary Internet connections.  It will also cover the transportation costs of a one-day excursion for all institute participants, free ground transportation from Athens International Airport to town, and 15% discounts at all town restaurants.

TRAVEL

Arriving: The official arrival date for institute participants is June 19th, 2005. Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to Greece. Participants planning to travel by air should arrange to arrive at Athens International Airport. Transportation from the Athens airport will be provided for participants arriving on June 19th, 2005. (Please contact Christina Valaki at valaki_christina@hotmail.com or ellisponto@yahoo.com if arriving at Athens International Airport on June 19th in order for her to make the transportation arrangements.) Participants arriving before or after this date may use public transportation or taxi service.

Departing: The official departure date for the institute is July 16th, 2005. MEALS

The city of Xylocastro and the surrounding region offer a wide selection of restaurants and taverns with an emphasis on small fish (fresh from the Corinthian Gulf), meats (from local shepards who reside on the nearby mountain of Ziria) and the traditional cuisine of the Peloponnesians (rooster, meats baked in ceramic pots, pies and various regional hors d’oeuvres). Good regional cheese and local wine can be enjoyed everywhere. A full-meal can easily be purchased for 11 EURO. In addition, there are always faster, less expensive options for an occasional meal such as sandwiches, souvlakis, gyros, and cheese of spinach pies. Some local restaurants have offered to give Institute participants a 15% discount.
