Mary and her family are eligible for which programs?
- Food Stamps - Yes. These would be appropriate if Mary is not working presently and will probably apply for welfare benefits.
- WIC Program - Yes. The WIC program will provide supplemental food coupons for Mary and her two children as well as some nutrition education, health screening and referral benfits.
- School Lunch Program - No. Mary's children are not of school age, so this program would not apply.
- Meals on Wheels - No. Meals on Wheels is a food assistance program reserved for the elderly and disabled. Mary and her family would not be eligible.
- Salvation Army/soup kitchen- Perhaps. If Mary has little or no food in the house and now has no income until her welfare benefits are approved, she and her family may benefit from an emergency food assistance program.
Federal nutrition policy is based on evidence gathered from scientific consensus data regarding the epidemiology of nutrition and chronic disease prevention. The US Dietary Guidelines are published jointly by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Department of Health and Human Services as a cornerstone of federal nutrition policy. Chapter 2 of Healthy People 2000 for the US is on nutrition and contains 21 objectives consistent with the dietary guidelines.
Based on section 1 of this module, select the seven (7) dietary guidelines you think comprise the latest version of the US Dietary Guidelines.
