The Division of Thoracic Surgery partners with colleagues and referring physicians to ensure rapid access and timely evaluation for new patients and consultations.  Clinical collaboration with other pertinent subspecialties will become essential to provide state of the art care. These collaborations will include pulmonary, gastroenterology, as well as surgical oncology. Through multi-disciplinary collaborations thoracic surgical care can become guided by the latest research evidence.

The Division and its faculty provide preoperative, operative, and critical care for all diseases of the thorax (chest), including:

• Early and locally advanced lung cancer
• Pretreatment staging of thoracic neoplasms
• Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)
• Lung transplantation
• Lung volume reductions surgery (LVRS, 'emphysema surgery')
• Esophageal carcinoma
• Management of complex esophageal diseases (complications of gastroesophageal reflux, neuromotor diseases, etc.)
• Tracheal tumors and airway management
• Malignant pleural effusions
• Mesothelioma and other malignant pleural diseases
• Chest wall tumors and chest wall deformities (pectus excavatum)
• Pulmonary metastases
• Mediastinal tumors (thymoma)

Expertise in counseling patients, families, and physicians in strategies for re-operative or complex thoracic diseases, selection and access to clinical investigations (clinical trials) for novel therapy, and implementation of multidisciplinary disease site teams (thoracic surgery, thoracic medical oncology, radiation oncology, pulmonary medicine, nursing, physical rehabilitation, social work, and others) optimize pre-treatment planning.
