The Department of Dermatology operates its own clinical dermatopathology and immunofluorescence laboratory for processing patient biopsies, collaborating with the Pathology Department. It diagnoses in-house more specimens than any of the university-based programs in Texas, and is one of the busiest in the country. Its physicians work closely with clinicians to coordinate the best care for each patient. The Dermatopathology and Immunodermatology sections are nationally recognized for their experience and expertise with difficult diagnostic cases. A Dermatopathology fellowship is available and enhances the Department’s mission to advance patient care through education, innovation, and research.

The dermatopathology laboratory at The University of Texas Medical School is under the direction of Ron Rapini MD, who is also Chair of the Dept of Dermatology. Dr Rapini has been practicing dermatopathology since 1983 and is an internationally recognized expert on the subject. He is board certified in dermatology and dermatopathology. He was president of the American Society of Dermatopathology in 1999. In 2004 he was president of the American Board of Dermatology. He has been Chair of the joint test committee of the American Board of Dermatology and American Board of Pathology that certifies physicians in dermatopathology. He published an “Atlas of dermatopathology” in 1988 and has a book entitled “Practical Dermatopathology” the 2nd edition of which was published in 2012.
The laboratory receives skin biopsies from all over the country for interpretation. The laboratory charges reasonable fees and accepts many forms of insurance (see list under http://www.utphysicians.com/patient-guide/insurance/). For instructions on sending specimens, call 713-500-8331.
