Perpetual Availability
The true potential of multimedia educational material and other scholarly
works can be realized only if they are integrated into a global, digital
repository. This repository must provide for long-term archiving, ubiquitous
on-line access and electronic citations. If the longevity of digital works
and their reference base is not preserved, authors and institutions will
not invest the immense resources required to produce scholarly multimedia
materials. To do so would be akin to an author in the paper centric world
of the late twentieth century laboring extensively to produce a highly
illustrated book having a life span of only one to six months and containing
references that can never be located.
While the University of Texas Houston cannot guarantee perpetual
on-line availability of materials, it will strive to permanently make available
for on-line access all materials that bear the imprimatur of the U.T. Houston
Electronic Press. If, for any reason, it becomes necessary for the University
to cease electronic distribution of any of these digital works, it will
endeavor to locate a third party that will continue on-line distribution
of such material.
