Comparison of NIH Award Recipients 1993 - 2003 All grant applications to the NIH are subject to a rigorous peer-review
process. Because of this and because the NIH is the major funding source
for biomedical research, success in obtaining basic science and clinical
funding from NIH is an important measure of the quality of an institution
and its faculty. Competition for NIH funding has increased dramatically
in the past decade, and UTHSC-H’s ranking relative to similar institutions
is an indicator of the university’s growth in research quality.
Since the ranking system used in this survey takes into account total
NIH dollars received, institutions with large numbers of faculty tend
to rank higher than those with fewer faculty. Given the small number
of UTHSC-H faculty relative to some of the other universities in this
survey, UTHSC-H fares well in the comparison. Note: Includes all higher education institutions that received support from the National Institutes of Health. There were 515 rankings in FY 2002.
