12. What does vesting mean?

Vesting means you are guaranteed a retirement annuity at the time of retirement.

TRS – 5 years of creditable service with TRS.
ORP – 1 year and 1 day of participation in the plan.

13. What Benefits will I receive at the time of retirement?

Insurances – premium sharing, medical, dental, vision and a limited amount of life. In addition, a monthly annuity for TRS or ORP.

14. Is social security deducted from my TRS annuity check?

No.

15. Can I continue working after I retire?

Yes, however, there are some guidelines that must be followed. You should contact TRS at 800-223-8778 or your benefits office at 713-500-3935 to discuss these guidelines.

17. How do I get tuition reimbursement?

You may contact your Department's Administrator to determine if tuition reimbursement is available.

20. I am terminating my employment. What do I do about continuing benefits?

A federal law known as COBRA (short for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985), dictates that coverage is available to all insured employees for a certain period of time after they terminate employment. An exit interview is recommended and the information is given at that time as well. Benefits can provide you with the necessary forms for you to enroll under COBRA with the insurance company.

21. How can I enroll in a Tax Sheltered Annuity (TSA)?

You request a copy of the approved TSA carrier list with an enrollment form. You would choose a carrier and complete an application with them. You would complete the enrollment form and return it to the Benefits Office.

22. How often can I make changes to my TSA amount?

You can make as many changes as you want.
