Academic
Preparation and Prerequisites [top]
Applicants for the Ph.D. Degree Program
- You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree, or its equivalent
- An M.S. degree is not required in order to apply for the Ph.D. Program
- You must take the General Test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
- Your undergraduate course work should provide you with a strong background in the area related to your research interests.
- For biology-based research interests, this background should include
- Biology, including a course in introductory biology
- Biochemistry, including prerequisite organic chemistry
- Calculus, at least one semester
- Physics, at least two semesters
- For the Medical Physics Program, this background should include
- A Bachelor’s degree in Physics, or strong course preparation in Physics
- For the Biomathematics & Biostatistics Program, this background includes
- Advanced mathematics courses, including real analysis, numerical analysis and abstract algebra
Applicants for the M.S. Degree Program
- You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent
- You must take the General Test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
- You must clearly indicate in your personal statement (see Required Application Materials, below) why you are interested in the M.S. degree, and how this degree will promote your career plans

Application Materials [top]
A formal application includes the following:
- A completed application form and payment of a $10 non-refundable
application fee.
- A personal statement from the applicant stating
- Research background
- Objectives in seeking advanced education
- Professional goals
- The field(s) of study of greatest interest
- Reasons for seeking admission at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston.
- Three letters of recommendation from persons qualified to evaluate
the applicant's past scholastic performance, scholastic ability, research
interest and motivation, and personal attributes such as character and
personality. If the applicant is currently enrolled in or has completed
a graduate program, one of these letters must be from the applicant's
academic advisor or mentor.
- One complete certified transcript from each institution of higher
(i.e., post-secondary) education attended; the transcript should show
a record of all academic work completed and must be submitted by the
college or university directly to the Office of the Registrar.
- Results of the Graduate Record Examinations General Test (the Subject
Test is not required). Scores from the Graduate Record Examinations must
be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to the Office
of the Registrar.
- Personal interviews may be arranged at the discretion of the Admissions
Committee.
The Admissions Committee may commence its consideration of applicants
who have provided unofficial copies of transcripts and GRE scores, but
final acceptance requires receipt of official documents.
- GSBS is committed to providing a comfortable and safe environment for our students, whether they are attending classes or performing research in the labs of our faculty members. To help ensure this goal, GSBS and our parent institutions have required a background check of all faculty and employees. Beginning Fall 2007, students will be included in this process. Prior to matriculation, all students will be required to provide a criminal background check.
