ORGANIZATION

The organization of The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) is unique. Participating faculty from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Texas A & M University Institute of Biosciences and Technology have developed training Programs based primarily upon their research interests, rather than departmental affiliations. Programs thus have many potential faculty advisors, state-of-the-art equipment housed in multiple departments, and extensive resources for training in specific areas.

GSBS is also unique in that students are admitted directly to the School rather than to individual Programs. This gives students the flexibility to select either a Program or an individualized, inter-disciplinary course of study at any time before, during, or after their 1st year.

Because of this organization, the School welcomes applicants considering multiple options within the biomedical sciences as well as those who have already decided upon a specific area. Admission is based primarily on an applicant’s potential for a successful scientific career, rather than the specific area(s) of interest.

All Ph.D. students receive identical stipends ($23,000 effective fall 2005) regardless of whether the affiliate with a Program or pursue an individualized, inter-disciplinary course of study.
