Why should I consider GSBS?

A wide variety of factors combine to make GSBS an ideal choice for education and training in the biomedical sciences. These include:

Faculty

Facilities

  • Location -- located in the renowned Texas Medical Center, the largest comprehensive medical center in the world (also see Cost of Living Comparison)
  • Laboratories -- modern and well equipped, over 90% of the labs have been constructed within the last 27 years (see Programs for descriptions of research facilities)
  • Library -- the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library serves the entire medical center; other specialized libraries exist (see Texas Health Science Libraries)
  • Housing/Recreation Center -- safe, convenient and affordable housing is available near the campus; the UT Student Housing complex is adjacent to the Recreation Center

Flexibility

  • Applicants are Admitted to GSBS, not any specific Program or Department – students have the opportunity to perform the 3 required tutorial rotations in labs of their choice.  This provides the opportunity to “test the waters” and develop new research interests prior to identifying a research area for the dissertation
  • Choice of Programs -- students can affiliate with one of the 16 Programs of Study or develop their own tailor-made course of study
  • Minimal Course Requirements -- the Area Course Requirements are designed to give students a basic understanding of the four major areas of biomedical science and can usually be completed in the first year of study (see Degree Requirements)

Friendly

  • Student-oriented -- GSBS is a supportive and student oriented graduate school. Check this out with current students (see Graduate Student Association for student contacts)
  • Office of Academic Affairs -- the GSBS Office of Academic Affairs, Dean's Office Advisors, and Ombudspersons are always available to assist students
  • Student Services -- the UT-Houston Health Science Center maintains a great variety of services for students
  • Entering Student Orientation -- a week-long set of activities serve to orient entering students both academically and socially

Financial Aid

  • Graduate Research Assistantship -- these assistantships awarded to nearly all entering students and most advanced students as well, provide a stipend of $26,000 per annum, beginning in the fall of 2008
  • Fellowships and Training Grants -- a wide variety of fellowships and training grants are available to GSBS students (see Student Funding Information)
  • Travel -- each year GSBS awards travel funds in excess of $30,000 to nearly 100 students to enable them to attend scientific meetings at which they present their research
  • Loans -- short and long-term loans are available through the UT- Houston Student Financial Aid
