Guests from Governor Perry’s Office

On March 3, 2005, the Office of International Programs and UTHSC-H hosted a lunch and a program-presentation for a delegation from Italy. Bambino Gesu Hospital physician leaders and administrators visited TMC and it's institutions as guests of Governor Rick Perry.

The delegation from Bambino Gesu Hospital consisted of: Alberto Villani, MD (director of the division of general pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics), Maria Osti, MD (vice-director of medical direction), Sergio Bottero, MD (ENT), Nicola Capozza, MD (chief of renal transplantation) and Valentina Osti, MD (hospital planning and design). Mr. Roberto DeHoyos (director, international business & recruitment economic development & tourism) from the Governor’s Office accompanied the group.

Michael McKinney, MD (senior executive vice president and chief operating officer) welcomed the visitors. Catherine Flaitz, DDS, MS (dean, Dental Branch) presented an overview of the Dental Branch and Dr. John W. Sparks, MD (David R. Park Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics) gave an overview of the Department of Pediatrics.

During the afternoon program, President James Willerson welcomed the delegation to UTHSC-H. Dr. Hui-Ming Chang gave an overview of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Mark E. Wong, DDS (associate professor and chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and director of residency training) gave a presentation about “Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Texas Medical Center (overview of the Department and Residency program)”. Dr. Wong was accompanied by Didier Malis, DDS, MD (chief resident in OMS) and Jose Marchena, DMD, MD (assistant professor and chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Ben Taub General Hospital).

Jon E. Tyson, MD, MPH (professor of pediatrics, obstetrics, internal medicine and epidemiology; director, Center for Clinical Research and Evidence-Based Medicine; professor, division of management, policy, and community health) gave a presentation about the Center for Clinical Research and the program for Master's Degree Program in Clinical Research and Evidence-Based Medicine. Brenda H. Morris, MD (associate professor of pediatrics and medical director, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital) gave a presentation about the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, MD (associate professor and head, pediatric pulmonary and critical care medicine; director, Fellowship Training Program) spoke about Pediatric Pulmonary Care. John W. Sparks, MD (David R. Park professor and chairman, Department of Pediatrics) spoke about training in Pediatric Medicine.
