Fu-Jen Catholic University delegation visits UTHSC-H Representatives from Fu-Jen Catholic University, Taiwan were welcomed to the University of Texas Health Science Center following the formation of an Agreement of Cooperation and a Summer Research Program Agreement between the two universities. In August 2005, Bernard Chien-Chiu Li, PhD (president and professor of Philosophy Department), Fr. Frank E. Budenholzer, PhD (board of trustee, Fu-Jen Catholic University, chair, Fu-Jen University Foundation, and professor of the Chemistry Department), Fr. Yu-Kong Chang, PhD (member of the board of Fu-Jen Catholic University and professor of Information Management Department), Han-Sun Chiang, MD, PhD (dean, College of Medicine, member of the board of Fu-Jen University Foundation, and professor of School of Medicine) and Ming-Hsien Hsiao (assistant, Fu-Jen University Foundation and Office of Public Affairs) visited UTHSC-H. Also in attendance was Mr. Yuri Yaotsung Chih (director, Cultural Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston). President James T. Willerson met with the group and gave an overview of the University. The delegation also met with Michael McKinney, MD (senior executive vice president and chief operating officer), Gary C. Rosenfeld, PhD (professor and assistant dean for educational programs, Medical School), Patricia Butler, MD (professor and associate dean, educational programs), Jimmie L. Pope (coordinator, Summer Research Program), and Hui-Ming Chang, MD, MPH. Discussions included curriculum and summer research program at the medical school. Two Fu-Jen Catholic University medical students, Chih-Fan Yeh and Chun-Chieh Lin, participated in 2005 Summer Research Program at UTHSC-H.  UTHSC-H faculty Ah-Lim Tsai, PhD (professor, internal medicine) brought this affiliation to the university. Fu-Jen Catholic University was established by the Holy See in Beijing in 1925. In 1956, the Fu-Jen Alumni Association proposed re-opening Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. Archbishop Yu Pin was selected by Pope John XXIII to carry out the tasks necessary and was appointed President by the Pope. At present, Fu-Jen is administered by three constituent groups: the Chinese Bishop Conference, the Society of the Divine Word, and the Society of Jesus. Fu-Jen has 8 colleges and 44 departments and offers 7 PhD programs and 35 masters programs. The total enrollment is nearly 23,000 students. More than 97,000 students have graduated from Fu-Jen since its reopening in Taiwan. The faculty consists of more than 740 professors, 150 associate professors and about 650 lecturers.
