For more than 50 years, the Fulbright Scholar Program has offered grants for college and university faculty, as well as for professionals and independent scholars, to lecture and conduct research in countries around the world. This program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
It was an honor for the Office of International Programs to host Fulbright Scholar Aliya Smagulovna Toleuova, MD, PhD from Kazakhstan, a researcher at the Karaganda State Medical Academy.
During her nine months at UTHSC-H (August 2004 to May 2005), Dr. Toleuova was hosted by Arch Carson, MD, assistant professor of occupational medicine at the School of Public Health.
Dr. Toleuova used her grant for her research project “The Influence of Occupational Safety and Health Policies to the Rate of Occupational Disease among Miners”, which analyzed the American occupational health policies for miners.
Her research identified public health policies that may aid the occupational safety of miners in her country and proposed recommendations on how to improve health policies in Kazakhstan.
Her research and recommendations will be valuable for Kazakhstan and will also benefit other countries with the same problems. |
