UTHSC-H receives delegation from Central and South America
June 12, 2003
In early June, The U.S. Department of States' International Visitor Program brought an international delegation from Central and South America. Hosted by the The Institute of International Education (IIE), the group traveled to meet with key executives from UTHSC-H under the mission "Protection of International Property Rights in the U.S."
The group was composed of the President of El Salvador's Superior Council of Public Health, a Panamanian judge, and officials from two key universities in Colombia and Costa Rica. This delegation plays a leading role in promoting intellectual property protection in their home countries and regionally. While here, they examined the role of academics, government, businesses, law enforcement personnel, legal professionals, and the court system in creating, interpreting and enforcing copyright, trademark and patent policies.
Dr. Hui-Ming Chang met with the delegation and presented them with an overview of the University and its' components, in addition to a description of the process of forming an affiliation agreement.
The Office of International Programs coordinated the visit at UTHSC-H and arranged for meetings with Dr. Bruce Butler (director of the Office of Technology), Dr. Lenard Lichtenberger (professor of the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology) and Dr. Robert W. Strozier (patent attorney, consultant for UTHSC-H). |
