The time to prepare a U.S. Income Tax Return is back!

International students and scholars who received any payment for services in the United States during the 2011 calendar year must prepare a US income tax form and submit it to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by midnight on Monday, April 16, 2012. This is required even if all or part of your US earnings are exempt from tax under a tax treaty with your country. Moreover, internationals visitors holding J-1 or F-1 visa status should fill out and submit an IRS Form 8843 even if you received no payment while in the United States! The Office of International Affairs will be hosting a Tax Information Workshop on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. The outline of the presentation, handouts and sample tax returns will be available after the workshop, to those in attendance.

Additionally, The Houston CPA Society and the Internal Revenue Service are sponsoring a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site to provide free tax help for Nonresident international students and scholars. Nonresidents interested in learning how to complete your tax return or having your IRS Form 1040NR completed, are invited to utilize the services of this VITA site hosted at the University of Houston main campus.
