The implementation of Problem-Based Learning was a major educational initiative undertaken by the Medical School in September 1994. The program is immensely popular with both faculty and students. Problem-Based Learning groups of eight to nine students are held three times a week throughout the second year. The cases are organized around organ systems and developed by both basic scientists and clinicians. One hundred faculty serve each year as group facilitators. The objectives of Problem-Based Learning are:

• To develop effective problem-solving and clinical-reasoning skills
• To develop life-long learning skills
• To increase retention of basic science information
• To foster the development of interpersonal skills
