Residency Training Program - Categorical & Secondary (ACGME Accreditation # 040-48-31-152)

Anesthesia Resident Dr. EllisThe Department of Anesthesiology offers an outstanding clinical anesthesia experience that can be tailored to meet individual educational goals. You will receive thorough preparation for board certification in anesthesiology, extensive didactic training, subspecialty training, and clinical and laboratory research opportunities. The goal of our fully accredited Residency Program is to educate physicians in the fundamentals of anesthesia and its related disciplines. We aim to graduate broadly educated, well-rounded practitioners with the abilities and resources to enter with confidence any aspect of anesthetic practice they choose. The program offers an intense background in the basic sciences of physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology, as well as the opportunity to apply these disciplines to the broad spectrum of clinical practice. Educational activities are centered in the operating room and classroom, but also occur at the University Center for Pain Medicine and Rehabilitation at Hermann, as well as the Shock Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Hermann Hospital. Clinical exposure to every aspect of anesthetic practice is provided in Hermann's and LBJ's operating rooms and specialty areas at Texas Children's Hospital, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Texas Heart Institute. Applicants who match with the Categorical Residency will spend their PGY 1 year satisfying the requirements of the Clinical Base Year by serving as interns in Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics or Pediatrics. Details of training program and application procedures may be found on the Program's web site.

  Fellowship Training Programs

Cardiovascular & Thoracic Anesthesia - Adult or Pediatric

The focus of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Fellowship is to provide an environment in which to acquire the knowledge and skills required to provide outstanding care in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesia. The program is set up as a one year training period, with full exposure to complex aortic, vascular, cardiac and vulvular cases. A dedicated month is spent in the echo lab, under the supervision of experienced echocardiographers. In addition to adult cardiac procedures, fellows will participate in Congenital Pediatric Cardiac procedures. For those wishing to pursue Pediatric Cardiac training, the Fellowship will be more heavily weighted toward that goal, with a minimum of two months of adult cardiac training. Explore the program here.
