1975
Gabriel Haddad (R ‘75) is the new chair of the Department of Pediatrics
at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine
and Medical Center and the new physician-in-chief at San Diego’s
Children’s Hospital and Health Center. UCSD’s Department
of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital are affiliated programs,
with most of UCSD’s pediatric training and inpatient care based
at Children’s Hospital.
1977
Moses Herrera (M.D., ‘77) was profiled in the Star-Telegram, a
newspaper of Fort Worth, Texas. He recently joined the JPS Health Network’s
family medicine center in Arlington, Texas.
1983
Mark Brown (M.D., ‘83) was promoted to professor of clinical pediatrics
at the University of Arizona, where he has been in the pulmonary section
since 1995. His wife, Susan, is completing a master’s degree in
accounting at the university. Their oldest son, Kristofor, is an electrical
engineer. Their daughter, Rebecca, began law school at Notre Dame in
the fall. And, their youngest son, Jeff, is a sophomore in high school.
Mark and Susan recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Walter Lowe (M.D., ‘83) recently joined
the Orthopedics Department at Baylor College of Medicine.
1985
Timothy Boone (M.D., Ph.D., ‘85) chief of the urology service at
The Methodist Hospital and professor and chair of the Scott Department
of Urology at Baylor College of Medicine, received the John W. Overstreet,
M.D., Award March 29, 2005. The award is given annually to a Methodist
physician who exemplifies the best of the medical profession by demonstrating
respect, empathy, and caring in his or her interactions with patients,
family, and staff. He is the eighth physician to receive the Overstreet
award.
1988
Mariellen Barker (M.D., ‘88) is enjoying her new position with
The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre, an orthopedic group, where she
treats musculoskeletal conditions with primary focus on neck and back
problems.
Steven Holzman (M.D., ‘88) is about to start his eighth year of
private practice in plastic surgery in Austin, Texas, where he recently
finished serving as president of the Austin Society for Plastic Surgeons – a
post he held for three years. He is married and has a son, Arthur (4),
and daughter, Edith (2). He writes that he and his wife are working with
an architect to design and build an energy efficient home next to a nature
preserve. “Other than a recent huge bout with chigger bites from
a kid party, there is not much to complain about living in Austin,” he
says.
Stil Kountakis (M.D., ‘88) is senior editor
of the first textbook on The Frontal Sinus. The book is a comprehensive
information source on the anatomy and management of frontal sinus disorders.
Stil is vice chair of the Medical College of Georgia Department of
Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and director of the Division of
Rhinology.
Kenneth Lipshy (M.D., ‘88, FACS) is now
chief of surgery at the Veterans Administration Northern Indiana Health
Care System in Fort Wayne, Ind. He also has an academic appointment
at Indiana University via the Indianapolis Veterans Administration
Hospital. He has two children, Bradley (9) and Genesis (5).
1989
William Moore (M.D., ‘89) is in solo pediatric private practice
in Dallas. He and his wife, Susan, have three “beautiful” daughters,
Caroline (9), Juliet (2), and Natalie (1). “I am still running
competitively and doing well on the Masters Scene (under 40 years) nationally,” he
writes. He encourages alumni to call him when visiting Dallas.
1991
Holly Clause (M.D., ‘91) reports that she and her husband, Andrew
Stoebner (M.D., ‘89), welcomed Juliet Haishan Stoebner (2) to the
family. Juliet joins brothers Zachary (8) and Jacob (6). They live in
Abilene, Texas.
1992
Mark Chassay (M.D., ‘92), head team physician within the Athletics
Sports Medicine Department at The University of Texas, was appointed
chief medical officer by the United States Olympic Committee for the
medical team who attended the Visa Paralympic World Cup in Manchester,
England, from May 10-17, 2005.
Jose Diaz (M.D., ‘92) is associate professor
of surgery and medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in
Nashville, Tenn. He is also the director of Emergency General Surgery
and co-director of the Adult Nutrition Support Service at Vanderbilt.
He and his wife, Dinah, have three children, Gabriella, Veronica, and
Alejandro.
1993
John Caldwell (M.D., ‘93) and Ann-Marie Menendez-Caldwell (M.D., ‘93)
live in South Carolina with their three children John-John (9), Rebecca
(6), and Michael (2). John completed a dermatopathology fellowship and
is now a full partner in a group of eight pathologists. Ann-Marie is
in part-time private practice. The Caldwells miss Houston but report
that South Carolina is beautiful.
Shervin Dean (M.D., ‘93) is completing his
residency in radiology and will soon begin a fellowship in magnetic
resonance imaging at Dartmouth. After the fellowship, he plans to join
a private practice group in Hershey, Penn., in July 2006. His wife,
Wendy, is a psychiatrist, and they have two children, Austin (6) and
Caleb (2).
Cheryl Gonzales (M.D., ‘93) lives in Tampa,
Fla., with her husband, George Nolas, Ph.D. She is a psychiatrist at
the dual diagnosis treatment program at the James A. Haley VA Medical
Center.
1996
Faye Johnson (M.D., Ph.D., ‘96) joined the Thoracic Medical Oncology
Department at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in September 2003. She and
her husband, Ajay Kwatra, M.D., recently celebrated their 12th wedding
anniversary. They have two children, Sean (5) and Megan (3).
1997
John William Davis, III (M.D., ‘97) is currently practicing cardiothoracic
and cardiovascular surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings,
Mont. He completed his general surgery residency at The University of
Tennessee in 2002 and followed it with a cardiothoracic surgery residency
at the Texas Heart Institute, which he completed in 2004. He and his
wife, Kristi, have been married since 1993, and they have three children,
Joshua Lee (5), Jessica Craig (3), and Abigail Rhea (2).
Lowell Ku (M.D., ‘97) moved to Louisville,
Ken., for a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
He finished his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at John Peter
Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, and writes that he is excited
about the next chapter of his life.
Cynthia M.E. Strohofer Taber (M.D., ‘97)
has been busy working for Anesthesia Consultants of Fredericksburg,
Texas, starting a pain practice, and studying for her pain medicine
boards. (She completed a pain medicine fellowship in 2002.) She and
her family recently moved to a ranch outside of Fredericksburg and
are enjoying their new home. Her daughter, Rachael, graduated from
the Texas Military Institute and is now studying at Baylor University
Louise Herrington School of Nursing.
1998
John Pillow (M.D., ‘98) moved from Georgia to Texas to begin an
emergency medicine residency in July at Parkland Health & Hospital
System in Dallas. Even though he is board certified in family practice,
he has also practiced emergency medicine for the past 15 years. Through
the residency training, he would like to become board certified in emergency
medicine. “I am excited to move back to Grapevine, Texas, and am
looking forward to this GRAND experience in Dallas,” he writes. “My
wife and my son are moving with me, and we are up to the financial and
lack of sleep challenge I will soon be facing. Wish me luck, and wish
me sleep.”
1999
Mr. and Mrs. Umberto Allori, parents of Alexander Allori (M.D., M.P.H., ‘99, ‘03)
write: “We are thrilled to announce the much-anticipated engagement
of our son Alexander to the lovely Elizabeth Marquéz, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Paulino Marquéz, of Bayside, N.Y., and Galícia,
Spain. Elizabeth is a graduate of Hofstra University and is now a pediatric
and neonatal critical care nurse at the Weill-Cornell Medical Center
in New York. Our son is a third-year surgical resident at Beth Israel
Medical Center in Manhattan, where he was recently awarded the Junior
Surgical Resident Clinical Achievement Award. An April 2007 wedding is
planned.”
Erica (Cox) Cotton (M.D., ‘99) returned
to Houston with her husband, Shawn, to practice musculoskeletal radiology
after completing a fellowship at the University of Michigan and her
residency in Boston.
2000
Mark Steven Barlow (M.D., ‘00) is pleased to announce the opening
of his plastic and reconstructive surgery practice in Nassau Bay, Texas.
He completed his plastic surgery training at The University of Texas
Medical Branch in Galveston. He performs both cosmetic and reconstructive

Thomas Collins (M.D., ‘00) and his wife,
Diana, are proud to announce the birth of their first child, Christian,
born March 22, 2005. Thomas finished his general surgery residency
at the University of Florida and began a liver transplant fellowship
at UCLA in July 2005.
Han Dang (M.D., ‘00) and his wife, Elisa,
are proud to announce the birth of their first child, Ella Anh Dang,
born June 12, 2005. Han also reports he is completing a nephrology
fellowship here at the Medical School.
Michael Petersen (M.D., ‘00) will complete his residency and chief
residency in pediatrics at Washington University this year and then will
begin a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Washington University/St.
Louis Children’s Hospital. On April 20, 2003, he and his wife,
Jaisy, celebrated the birth of their daughter, Anjali Elise.
2005
Russell Giles (M.D., ‘05) recently moved back home with his family
to Henderson County, Texas, to work in the emergency room at East Texas
Medical Center in Gun Barrel City. Russell specialized in internal medicine
and pediatrics.

Dr. Jim Hayden, ‘77 died July 29, 2005. He lived in Idaho.
Dr. Gary M. Berriesford, ‘81 died March
25, 2005. He lived in Kingwood, Texas.
Dr. Richard Jesneck, ‘88 died Dec. 24, 2004.
He was 43 and lived in Colleyville, Texas.
