USMLE Requirements

UT-Houston students must take (note: take, not pass) both parts of USMLE Step 2 in order to graduate.

For Step 2 CK, you have a 3-month window in which to schedule and take the exam once you have registered for it. For Step 2 CS, you have a 12-month window in which to take the exam. Do not wait until the last minute to schedule your CS exam!

Important Note:The state of Texas has adopted a '3-strikes' rule for all parts of the USMLE. In order to become a licensed physician in the state of Texas, you must pass each Step (1, 2CS, 2CK or 3) of the USMLE in three attempts or less. Failure to pass any of the Steps within three attempts will disqualify you from Texas licensure.

Step Three is also given on computer, and you may take that any time after you graduate. You may take Step Two even if you have not passed Step One, but you must have passed Steps One and Two in order to apply for Step Three. Application to take Step Three is made in conjunction with application for licensure by a particular state. The soonest you can be fully and individually licensed in Texas is after the completion of your internship year. Step Three is a requirement for licensure.
