Employee AwardsOutstanding Employee of the Quarter Award Nomination InformationThank you for taking the time to read about the University of Texas Houston Medical School's classified employees’ Outstanding Employee Award. Your interest in participating in this program will help to show that employees are appreciated here at the Medical School. Outstanding Employee Award honorees are selected by a committee made up of seven (7) members who represent major institutional areas. The members serve staggered two-year terms, so that the Committee has three or four new members every year. The Committee meets monthly. When a nomination is received, a non-voting Employee Relations Committee designee edits the nomination slightly, so that the identities of the nominator and nominee are concealed. Any reference to the person's name is changed to "he/she" or "him/her" and specific details about what functions that person performs that are part of their normal job description are deleted. Obvious spelling and grammatical errors are also corrected, so that each nomination looks "error-free" when judged. A code number is assigned so that the committee members can cast their votes. The nomination is then transcribed into a single report that is read by each of the Committee members each month. The period of eligibility is six (6) months. Nominations are not judged according to the number of nominations received; rather, it is the quality of the information included in the nomination that is considered. As the name of the award indicates, the Committee members have each been instructed to look for specific examples of behavior or accomplishments which, according to each member's professional judgment, are clearly beyond what is normally expected of a good employee. As a result, nominations which state only that an employee is "always cheerful, never rude," "always punctual," "helpful to co-workers," "highly efficient, hardworking, etc. will seldom be selected by Committee members because these characteristics are expected of all good employees, and are not examples of truly "outstanding" performance. If Committee members feel that none of the nominations under consideration indicate "Outstanding" qualities, they may elect to have no employee award for that month. HSC-General Employees who are housed in the Medical School and provide service to the Medical School community are eligible. They must have been in the Medical School building for at least one (1) year. There will be a maximum of two (2) awards per year from this pool. Please do not hesitate to contact Dawn Alvarado. Again, thank you for taking the time to nominate someone you feel is worthy of this award.
