Gross Anatomy Mini-Elective

Journal Club

Students will present one recent article from the primary literature. The expectation is that students will read several articles and pick one that is worth discussing. Figures from the article should be presented either by handouts or a Powerpoint presentation. The presentation should last 15-30 min.

For a grade of High Pass, it should be clear from the presentation that the paper is important and interesting.

For a grade of Honors, students should use 3-5 articles to discuss a broad concept. The intent is for students to discuss the papers in a summary fashion, rather than simply present them serially.

Final Presentation

Students do one dissection as the basis for discussing a clinical topic. The presentation incorporates photographic images of the dissection as part of a larger Powerpoint presentation. The presentation should last approximately 30 min.

For a grade of High Pass, the presentation should be clear and complete, with images of high quality and structures accurately labeled.

For a grade of Honors, in a addition to a high quality presentation, students should submit the presentation in essay format (5-7 single-spaced pages, plus figures, fully referenced).

The dissection requirement will be modified. Students will fully dissect one region of the body (e.g. Thorax, Abdomen, Head, Neck, Upper or Lower Extremity). The extent of this dissection will be roughly equivalent to half of one block of the Gross Anatomy course. The final presentation will be based on the dissection, with appropriate reference to clinically relevant topics.

Note

Those students wishing to earn a specific grade (such as Honors) should check their progress with the Course Director at regular intervals to be sure that they are satisfying the appropriate requirements.
