Operational Overview

Access to many UTHSC-H information resources is restricted.  Users are required to authenticate themselves via userid/password challenges prior to being authorized to access specific restricted resources. When a different user ID (UID) and password is required for each resource , everyone is faced with trying to remember an impossible number of user IDs and passwords. Thus the dream of a

single authentication process.

The global Internet is moving toward a single authentication process by the use of digital IDs and LDAP directory services; However, a transition period is necessary.

Currently, there are three general authentication modes in use for different systems

  • Digital IDs (Only some resources can currently use digital IDs.)
  • A single userid/password for ALL applications that are LDAP directory service enabled. Thus, a single userid/password can provide access to multiple restricted resources.
  • A different, unique userid/password for each restricted resource. (Not workable for accessing multiple restricted resources across the global Internet.)
