Exporting & Importing Your Digital ID

Overview

It is critically important that you export your digital ID to a floppy disk or CD and store the disk in a secure place. This provides a backup of your ID. Thus, if it is destroyed for some reason such as a disk crash, you can import your ID into your computer. You can also use the disk to import your ID into other computers that you use.

Security Alert: No one should have access to this backup except you! Therefore, your backup should never be kept on a shared network drive or even your own personal PC! Use a floppy disk or CD and keep this in a secure physical location for maximum security!

For even greater security, it is an excellent idea to export the private key from your computer and keep it stored on a “token” that you carry around with you. That way, if you accidentally leave your computer unattended, no one will have access to your private key. Please see your LAN manager if you are interested in this and need additional help.
