Viability of Old E-mail Addresses

E-mail Addresses for People

Official e-mail addresses previously assigned to individual members of the UT-Houston community will continue to function for two years after May 1, 2000. E-mail sent to an old address will be forwarded to the new address.

Consider the following example:

  • a person's former e-mail address was "jdoe@girch1.med.uth.tmc.edu"
  • her new address is "Jane.E.Doe@uth.tmc.edu"
  • mail sent to "jdoe@girch1.med.uth.tmc.edu" is automatically be sent to "Jane.E.Doe@uth.tmc.edu"
Thus, there is no immediate need to order new letterhead, business cards, etc. or otherwise notify others of one's change of e-mail address. It is recommended, however, to start the notification process since societies and other entities often still updated their directories only once a year.

E-mail Addresses for Existing Groups, Roles, Etc.

Organizational entities within the University have maintained non-individual, E-mail accounts on numerous UT-Houston mail servers. These entities may decide to deactivate many or all of these servers. If an email address is for an account on a deactivated server, then
  • a new account for the entity will need to be created on the new integrated e-mail system,
  • e- mail addressed to the old address will be forwarded to the new account,
  • the new account will also have a new "standard" address,
  • recipient lists can be maintained by group administrators designed by the responsible organizational unit..
