Web Publishing

Overview

Publishing content to Web servers involves:
  1. Determining the security classification of the Web documents to be published.
  2. Requesting Web Site space (departmental or personal).
  3. Designating who can publish to requested Web space.
  4. Defining access restrictions for viewing Web documents.
There are two methods available to upload and manage Web content. All methods require UTHSC-H uid and password.
  • Samba Mount - Windows Explorer, Dreamweaver's site manager or (Win/Mac) configured for Local/Network to mapped drive (shared drive) to assigned directory to publish
  • HTTPS - WebDAV enabled applications - e.g. Internet Explorer, MS Word, Excel, etc.

Requesting Web Publishing Space

There are three types of Web hosting/publishing options available. Usage must be consistent with University Security requirements. Each hosting option type requires a different Web server.

Web site Owners are responsible for all material being posted to the Web site. The owner must determine access restrictions for Web content and provide administration for its departmental web publishers.

Departmental

Space is provided upon receipt of a Departmental Publishing Request, by an organizational entity within UTHSC-H.  The owner is the current director or manager for the entity making the request. It is the owner's responsibility to designate "Web publishers" to its departments publishing space. Only materials approved by the organizational entity are to be published in this space
Personal
A personal file storage and Web publishing service called "XFiles" is provided to to facilitate scholarly and collaborative actives of students, faculty and staff. This system allows members of the UTHSC-H family to securely store personal documents such as notes, assignments, theses, dissertations research papers, graphics, etc. that can be securely accessed anywhere via a Web browser or a WebDAV enabled application.  This space is removed when the assigned owner leaves the University. Any member of the UTHSC-H family may create a XFiles account.
