Steps in obtaining a digital ID
Currently this supports all versions of Netscape and IE 6.0 and above. However,
you have to intsall the file OnSiteMSI.msi if
installing on IE 6.0 and higher. This is a short document that
explains why you need OnSiteMSI.html. If
you are using any other version, we are working on getting the other version
working again.
- Use the SAME computer for all the steps
below!
- Do NOT switch browsers and use Communicator
for some steps and IE for others!
- After reading this page, click on "Request a Digital ID" at
the end of this page.
- Complete the on-line enrollment form.
- Electronically submit the form which simultaneously causes your browser
to
- request you to create a password for your secure area on your computer
- generate your private/public key set
- store your key set as strongly encrypted files on your personal
computer
- sends the public key to the certification authority to await certification.
- Physically go to a local registration authority (LRAA) to have your
identity verified.
- Upon identify verification, you will receive an e-mail message containing
a URL.
- Use the URL to download your certified public key into the SAME
personal computer and browser that you used to request certification.
- Export your digital ID to a flexible disk.
- Store the flexible disk in a safe, secure place for backup purposes.
- Use the flexible disk to import your Digital ID into other computers
that you use.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
The password you chose for your security environment
- is never sent out on the network,
- must be unguessable,
- must never be written down,
- MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN - ONLY YOU KNOW YOUR
PASSWORD!!!!
Export your digital ID to a flexible disk &
save in secure location.
- Only you have your private key.
- If your security environment is destroyed (e.g.
a disc crash) you must import your digital ID from the flexible
disk.
- The flexible disk can also be used to install
your key set on other computers such as a laptop, your home computer,
etc.
