Systems Engineering Group
The function of Information Systems Engineering Group of Academic Technology is central to the mission of the Health Science
center. It insures that the computational and informational resources
required for the academic enterprise are available and appropriately integrated
both within the Health Science Center and with the National Information
Infrastructure (NII). The personal computer, with its associated network
resources, has become an interactive workstation that is required for
medical education, research and clinical decision making. Virtually all
available information regardless of its form (i.e. textual, graphical,
video and acoustical) is becoming instantaneously and directly accessible
via these personal workstations.
Responsibilities of this group include:
- the design, implementation and maintenance of an integrated, academic
computing environment.
- operation and maintenance of the crucial software and hardware systems
required to integrate academic information and computer resources,
- operation of the archiving and network dissemination of digital forms
of academic information: data bases, text, computer programs, images,
video, sound, and multimedia documents,
- serving as the academic liaison with the University of Texas System
Strategic Leadership Council (SLC), Information Technology, Management
Council (ITMC), Texas Department of Information Resources, the Internet
Activities Board (IAB), and other standards and computing organizations
such as EDUCAUSE and Internet 2 whose activities influence the academic
computing environment,
- serving as the Network Information Center designee responsible for
the registration and appropriate operation of all Internet nodes operated
by the Health Science Center,
- the establishment and implementation of standards and procedures for
Academic Technology and information sharing within the UTHSC-H and the
Texas Medical Center (TMC) community,
- providing technical design, development, and management expertise
to other Academic Technology programs and UTHSC-H operational entities, and
- investigating new technologies and, when appropriate, integrate the
required technologies into the Academic Technology environment.
