Supporting Information Technology
The information resources listed below are provided by information technology
organizations that either support academic institutions and/or provide
useful generic support in the areas of computer science and informatics.
- Association for Computing Machinery
(ACM)
ACM (founded 1947) is an international scientific and educational organization
dedicated to advancing the art, science, engineering, and application
of information technology, serving both professional and public interests
by fostering the open interchange of information and by promoting the
highest professional and ethical standards.
- American Medical Informatics Association
(AMIA)
The American Informatics Association is the premier association in the
United States dedicated to the development and application of medical
informatics in the support of patient care, teaching, research, and
health care administration. AMIA's mission is to advance the public
interest through charitable, scientific, literary, and educational activities.
- Corporation for National
Research Initiatives (CNRI)
The Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI) is a non-profit
organization dedicated to formulating, planning, and carrying out national-level
research initiatives on the use of network-based information technology.
CNRI concentrates on research and development for the National Information
Infrastructure, working collaboratively with industry, academia, and
government.
- Corporation for Research
and Educational Networking (CREN)
CREN's strategic mission is to support low-cost access to worldwide
electronic networking and its use for the benefit of education and research
communities.
- EDUCAUSE
EDUCAUSE is an international, nonprofit association whose mission is
to help shape and enable transformational change in higher education
through the introduction, use, and management of information resources
and technologies in teaching, learning, scholarship, research, and institutional
management. EDUCAUSE is a consolidation of the former EDUCOM and CAUSE
associations.
- Healthcare Information and Management
Systems Society
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), Chicago,
IL, founded in 1961, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting
a better understanding of health care information and management systems.
HIMSS represents over 6,000 health care professionals in four professional
areas: clinical systems, information systems, management engineering
and telecommunications.
- International Medical Informatics
Association
The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) was established
in 1978 to serve the specific needs in the application of information
science and information technology in the fields of medicine, health
care, and biomedical research. This field is also referred to as Medical
Informatics.
- Internet2
Internet2 is a consortium being led by 205 universities working in partnership
with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications
and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. Internet2
is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government
that fostered today´s Internet in its infancy.
- Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF)
The IETF is the protocol engineering and development arm of the Internet.
Though it existed informally for some time, the group was formally established
by the Internet Architure Board (IAB)
in 1986
- Internet Society (ISOC)
The Internet Society is the non-governmental International Organization
for global cooperation and coordination for the Internet and its internetworking
technologies and applications.
- World Wide Web Consortium - W3C
An international industry consortium. Services provided by the Consortium
include: a repository of information about the World Wide Web for developers
and users; reference code implementations to embody and promote standards;
and various prototype and sample applications to demonstrate use of new
technology.
