HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT ITEMS
TO CHECK
Wrong
or extra dial-up adapter -- (often from a previous ISP installation)--
there should only be one!
( i.e. AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy,
etc. )
1. Click on the
button
2. Follow the menu path Settings -> Control
Panels
3. Double-click on the Network icon
4. Choose the Configuration tab
5. IF there is another Dialup Adapter from
a previous ISP (Internet Service Provider)**
( i.e. Prodigy, CompuServe, AOL, FlashNet, etc.)**
Then choose the 'previous' Dialup Adapter and click Remove
IF YOU ARE NOT USING THEIR SERVICE.
IF YOU ARE USING THIS SERVICE, CONSULT THE ISP's DOCUMENTS FOR CONNECTING
VIA AN EXISTING
ISP.
6. Add
a 'generic' Dialup Adapter ( if one is not already present )
a. click Add
b. choose Adapter and click Add
c. choose Microsoft
d. choose Dialup Adapter
e. click OK
f. put in the Windows 95/98 CD if asked for it
7. Remove everything ( if listed ) from the resulting list except
TCP/IP
a. choose NetBeui &
click Remove
b. choose IPX/SPX &
click Remove (unless
you will be accessing a Novell Netware Network also)***
NOTE: If you will be accessing a
Novell Netware network, you will need to install the IntranetWare
Client for NetWare networks.
Check
network types
1. Click on
2. Follow the menu path Settings -> Control
Panels
3. Double-click on Network
4. Choose the Configuration tab
5. The only items that should be present here
are Dialup Adapter and TCP/IP
(one copy only, not pointing ("->") to anything)
To remove everything else, choose each "wrong"
item and click the Remove button.
Check
server types
1. Click on My Computer
2. Click on the Dial-up Networking
3. Right click on the icon for the Dial-Up
connection that is encountering the error message
4. Choose Properties
5. Choose the Server-Type tab
6. In the Allowed Network Protocols section,
make sure that only TCP/IP is checked***
NOTE: The information you enter is case sensitive.
Watch your capitalization's, spaces and punctuation.
Ten-digit
dialing
Make sure your computer is configured to dial the area code in addition
to the local seven-digit number.
If you are still having trouble making or keeping a connection, remove
all unnecessary network
components that may be installed in the Network control panel.
All you need to dial out are the Dialup Adapter and TCP -> Dialup Adapter
components.
If you still can't obtain or keep a good connection, follow the suggestions
in the Modem
Troubleshooting Guide located
in Windows 95 Help.
Checking Netscape Communicator User Settings
If you have more than one person using Netscape Communicator 4, you can
create multiple profiles
using the same copy ofCommunicator
with their respective identity & email settings.
To setup multiple profiles go to the Netscape
Communicator Configuration page.
STEPS TO
CHECK YOUR CURRENT NETSCAPE EMAIL CONFIGURATION
Check
your email settings in Netscape
1. Click on Edit
2. Go to & click Preferences
3. Click the '+' next to Mail & Groups
4. Click Identity
Check to see whether the appropriate fields below are entered correctly
a. Your name
b. Email address ( username@uth.tmc.edu
)
c. Reply-to address (only needed if different
from email address)
d. Organization (
UT Houston, UTHSC, etc. )

Next click on Mail Server
Check to see whether the fields appropriate fields below are entered correctly
a. To add or Edit the Incoming
Mail Servers click on the appropriate Add/Edit button
b. Outgoing mail server user name:
i.e. ( ' your email username' )
c. Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:
( oac27.hsc.uth.tmc.edu, admin4.hsc.uth.tmc.edu,..)
d. Incoming mail server:
( oac27.hsc.uth.tmc.edu, etc. )
e. Mail Server Type:
POP3
'POP3' (messages and folders are kept locally, on the hard disk)

Next click on Groups Server
The settings should be: news.uth.tmc.edu
Port: 119
Click the Add or Edit button to make the appropriate additions
or changes.

Next click OK to finish the process.
