In Netscape's Messenger go to Edit Preferences in the upper left hand
corner of the program window and choose Preferences from the pull down
window.
- Under Category / Mail & Newsgroups click on Mail
Servers
- Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server to be
mail.uth.tmc.edu and type in the Outgoing mail server user name that
was provided by your lan manager.
- Next, click on the Edit button to the right of the
Incoming Mail Servers window and the window below will appear
- Change the Server Name field as shown below
- The Server Type can be either POP3 or IMAP (preferred)
- POP3 = server downloads mail to the local PC and erases
it from the server
- IMAP = mail stays on the server and copies are sent to
the PC client or Web browser, user must remove any mail manually.
- Set the User Name to the same user name that was set in
the Outgoing mail server.
- Next, you should verify the mail identification
attributes. This information is under Category / Mail &
Newsgroups / Identity.
- Verify your name and your e-mail address as shown in the
example below.
All of the above changes are the minimum requirements for
using the new mail system. Below are some additional features
that users may wish to take advantage of.
IMAP NOTES: If you choose IMAP as
the delivery mechanism, be sure to set the location of your Sent
mail as shown below.
- Click on the Choose Folder option under Copies and
Folders, When sending a mail message, automatically Place a copy of the
sent mail message in the Sent folder on the IMAP server. This will make
it possible for the user to view their sent messages from any web
browser.
IMAP mail handling:
Most people prefer to have the mail messages disappear when it is
deleted. By default, Netscape marks the message for deletion but
does not remove it. To change this behavior do the following.
- Click on the mail server then on Edit to the right of the
Incoming Mail Servers. This will bring up a second configuration
window.
Click on the IMAP button and choose the settings shown in the
picture below.

web browser by pointing the browser at the following url https://oac40.hsc.uth.tmc.edu.Once
the page loads, a login window will appear for the user to
authenticate. This e-mail interface allows the user to check
their e-mail from anywhere in the world as long as they are connected
to the internet and have a web browser. Once authenticated the
users is presented an e-mail access and options screen. The
options include password changing, vacation message and mail
forwarding.
Pinpoint Addressing
This feature allows the mail client program to automatically insert
e-mail addresses of recipients by typing a portion of the recipients
name, or picking the recipient from a list. The information below
describes the configuration of the UT LDAP services and pinpoint
addressing.
- From the Task bar in Communicator or Messenger, click on
Communicator and choose the Addressbook from the pulldown menu
- When the addressbook window appears, click on File / New

below. The information shold be exactly as discribed here with
the exception of the description
- LDAP
Directory Server Information

- LDAP Server: ldap.uth.tmc.edu or vldap.uth.tmc.edu
- Search Root: o=The University of Texas-Houston Health
Science Center,st=Texas,c=US
- Port Number: 7389 (use port 389 if using vldap)
- Next, you should test the directory by looking up someone
at UT-HSC. If it works, proceed to the next step, if it fails,
verify the typing for the server, root and port as these are the most
common errors.

the mail client. To do this, click on Edit / Preferences /
