The Boss
William A. Weems, Ph.D. (Bill) is the Assistant Vice President of Academic Computing at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Associate Dean of Information Technology for the U. T. Houston Medical School and an associate professor in the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology, U.T. Houston Medical School. His research interests include the neurophysiology of sympathetic, prevertebral ganglia, production and control of intestinal motility and propulsion, and informatics as a research tool in the study, characterization and management of complex systems. Useful computational solutions suitable for biomedical applications require an integrated set of information systems. This recognition has led to his involvement in the development of the Texas Medical Center open systems network, participation in electronic publishing, the integration of academic and health care information systems at the application layer and the establishment of the U. T. System Public Key Infrastructure.

Support Staff
The support staff at the Office of Academic Computing (OAC) labor ceaselessly to ensure the rest of the OAC's work lives function as smoothly as possible. Some of their responsibilities include first-level customer support, tracking departmental finances and time-sheets, as well as purchasing.

Software Development Team
The Office of Academic Computing (OAC) provides a full range of services to integrate, process, and distribute information for the academic community. Our programmers and systems analysts will consult with University faculty and staff to:

  • determine the pieces required for effective systems,
  • identify other groups within the Health Science Center with complementary data needs,
  • determine the combination of custom and off-the-shelf software that provides the best price/performance solution.

In those cases where custom programming provides the best solution, the OAC offers software development on a fee-for-service basis.

Multimedia Scriptorium Team
Here at the Multimedia Scriptorium, our goal is to provide you with the tools necessary for creating dynamic content, whether on the web or in print. We can create to meet your needs, from a single graphic to animations with video to an entire free-standing on-line course. Our work is primarily fee-for service, with some proof-of-principle projects created at no charge. You have the ideas; we provide the tools and skills necessary to transform your ideas into a dynamic, attention-getting web site or educational module. Our artists will provide you with original graphics throughout your site, animation can create interactive educational activities, or provide clear explanations of more difficult concepts by showing in detail exactly what is occurring. Audio can be added to enhance the effect. Our designers will put all of these facets together in an easily navigable, well laid out site, or whatever your media your project needs.

Desktop Support Team
The Office of Academic Computing (OAC) provides software and configuration support for DOS and Microsoft Windows based personal computers and Macintosh computers.
