Internet Publishing Guidelines

Introduction

UTHSC-H supports the use of the Internet and Web applications for communicating within the UTHSC-H community and with the global community. In order to facilitate this, a network of Internet Resources is available for faculty, staff, students, and associates. This document's goal is to provide guidelines and requirements of using university resources for access to the Internet, use of Internet applications, and publishing to intranets and the Internet here at UTHSC-H.

While we support the individual rights of freedom of speech and expression, Internet servers, portals and Internet access at this institution are primarily paid with state funds. Therefore, certain requirements must be met, most of which are detailed in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOOP)

The university recognizes that material is created by many operating units, students, faculty, staff and others affiliated with the university. Publication by any of these on a university server or through university e-mail represents the university to audiences within and worldwide. While we provide these guidelines, neither Web Weavers nor OAC are responsible to police pages or sites. Instead, the guidelines act as a balance between the rights of the individual and the responsibilities of the institution.

Guidelines

Publishing via University Servers
The Office of Academic Computing maintains Internet servers for Web publishing and for e-mail. These servers are available for use by many operating units, students, faculty, staff and others affiliated with the university for internal use, public use, and special restricted uses. All information published via or accessed by UTHSC-H servers must be compliant with HOOP policies. Internet pages may not be used for the personal or private gain of any individual or group of individuals.

Departmental and Clinical Web Pages
Departments, Divisions, Labs, Clinics, etc. (hereafter called "departments") may choose to offer a web site of one or more pages. These web sites should:

  • comply with the rules within HOOP
  • provide current, correct information
  • no advertisements that would provide private or personal gain are allowed
  • be professional in design and provide a quality presentation
  • include a link to the University's Home Page (http://www.uth.tmc.edu)
  • include a link to the department's school
  • include a signature
  • must have the UTHSC-H logo

Although there may be many secondary and tertiary pages, there should be only ONE home page per department. Departments may wish to include a copyright statement, or other information on the bottom of the page along with the page signature. At least, the following information MUST be included in the page signature:

  • the date the page was created
  • the most correct edit date
  • the content owner
  • a contact, if different from the content owner
  • a way to reach the contact person or group (phone number, e-mail address, link to e-mail or link to a bio page)

Pages which give access to sensitive data, confidential information, and the like, should contain standard protection from unauthorized access.

Individual Home Pages
Students, faculty and staff are allowed to create home pages on university serves within the limits set by HOOP. As a reminder:

  • comply with the HOOP policies (state these)
  • a link to the university home page (http://www.uth.tmc.edu) must be on the main page
  • no advertisements that would provide private or personal gain are allowed
  • a page signature as described above
  • must have the UTHSC-H logo

UTHSC-H Logos
Several versions of the university logo are available for publishing on the Web and/or on paper. These choices are detailed at http://www.uthouston.edu/graphicguide.
