Patient Care and Surgery

On patient care . . .

Always put the patient’s interests first.

Remember that the eyes are connected to a person.

Patients will value what you tell them—think before you speak.

Educate your patients about their eye problems—even if you cannot treat, you can enlighten.

If you are debating about whether or not to see a patient, see him.

Don’t leave the last patient for someone else.

Mistakes and complications will occur—learn from them and commit to improve.

Do sweat the small stuff—little things can become big.

Each resident develops surgical skills by reading, assisting at surgeries and performing surgical procedures.  Surgical skills are developed in a stepwise fashion and the level of surgical skill required for different procedures will be determined by the faculty according to the guidelines below.  Residents are required to record ALL surgical procedures using the ACGME Resident Case Log System (https://www.acgme.org/residentdatacollection).  User name and password will be given to each new resident at orientation on July 1.  All procedures, no matter how trivial or routine they may seem, are performed under the direct supervision of an attending surgeon.
