The Introduction to Lab Animal Science course is a three hour course intended as an overview to introduce the student to Laboratory Animal Science. The course will review the state, federal, and institutional laws and guidelines in reference to laboratory animals. This course is a required course for all animal users. It is recommended for this course to be taken prior to the other courses.
The Practical Research Methodology – Rabbit course is a three hour course which introduces the student to the laboratory rabbit. In this course, the student is familiarized with the natural history of the rabbit, the use for the rabbit in research, the biology of the rabbit including reproduction, and anesthesia and analgesia. The student will also review various diseases of the rabbit, as well as the health care for the rabbit. A lab is provided to teach the student the proper physical restraint of the rabbit, injection techniques, blood withdrawal, and euthanasia. Attendance to both the lecture and the lab is required to receive full credit for this course. This course is required for anyone who will be working with rabbits. It is recommended to take the Introduction to Lab Animal Science course prior to attending this course.
The Practical Research Methodology – Mouse & Rat course is a three hour course which introduces the student to the laboratory mouse and rat. In this course, the student will learn about the mouse and rat anatomy, physiology, behavior, and its use in research. A lab is also provided for a “hands on” lab experience to teach the proper handling of rats and mice. Attendance to both the lecture and the lab is required to receive full credit for this course. This course is required for anyone who will be working with rats and/ or mice. It is recommended to take the Introduction to Lab Animal Science course prior to taking this course.
The Aseptic Surgical Techniques – Rodents course is a one and a half hour course which introduces the student to aseptic surgical techniques. This course provides guidelines for performing survival surgery on rodents as recommended by the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. A lab is provided to practice proper suturing, as well as gloving techniques to ensure a sterile environment. This course is required for anyone who will be performing surgery on animals. It is recommended to take the Introduction to Lab Animal Science course prior to taking this course.
