The C.I.R.C.L.E. Math kit

Market: Recently, it has been reported that students in the United States are testing poorly on standardized tests for skill in math. Clearly, this trend has the potential to undermine the US’s role as a leader in science and technology. Ideally, as children grow up, they would be exposed mathematical principles from an early age. This way, when they get older and are exposed to more formal math education, they will be able to apply ideas and themes they are familiar with in order to problem solve.

Competitors and Current Problems: There are numerous kits and programs available to teach pre-k aged children how to begin to understand the language and methods of math. However, most of these kits are not research based, and do not represent a cohesive approach to early science education

The Technology: The C.I.R.C.L.E. Science Kit, developed by Susan Landry and her collaborators at the UT Health Science Center at Houston, was created in accordance with the principles of the Children’s Learning Institute (CLI). The kit makes use of activities and materials in order to use something tangible to solve math problems. Additionally, the kit begins to familiarize children with the language and vocabulary of mathematical analysis.
