Residency Program

The University of Texas - Houston Health Science Center Medical School, Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery conducts a residency training program designed to provide well-balanced comprehensive training in all aspects of the specialty. This includes Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, Otology, Neurotology, Audiology, Speech Pathology, Rhinology, Laryngology, Bronchoesophagology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Maxillofacial Trauma. After completion of specialty training the physician will be eligible to take the examination required for certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Program Requirements

The program has three residents per year and requires one year of training in General Surgery followed by four years in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. All five years of training are taken at the University of Texas - Houston Health Science Center Medical School and the applicant is automatically accepted into the general surgery program for one year.

Clinical Affiliations

The Department has clinical affiliations with Memorial Hermann Hospital, a 500 bed teaching hospital in the Texas Medical Center, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, a 500 bed county hospital of the Harris County Hospital District. A wide variety of otolaryngologic conditions are treated at Hermann and LBJ Hospitals, including a large number of maxillofacial trauma cases. Eight to twelve months of specialty training are spent on the Head and Neck Service of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where the resident physician receives an integrated and broad based experience in the management of head and neck cancer.

Lectures

The Department conducts a weekly series of didactic lectures by faculty and guest speakers, journal club meetings, and resident conferences. In addition, the Department participates in a variety of clinical conferences throughout the Texas Medical Center.
The Chief resident is required to contribute to the education of more junior residents and medical students. Residents are expected to actively take part in the clinical care of patients, according to their level of training. Participation in basic and clinical research is strongly encouraged throughout the training program.

The selection of residency applicants is made through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Only applicants who have registered through ERAS and completed the application requirements will be considered for an interview.
