DEFICIENCY OF PREKALLIKREIN (FLETCHER FACTOR)

• Biochemical aspects:
  • Activation of Prekallikrein involves the cleavage of the polypeptide chain by activated Hageman factor (Factor XII).
  • Activated Kallikrein activates Factor XII as well as plasminogen, Factor IX, HMWK, and prorenin.
• Pathological Basis:
  • Mode of inheritance: autosomal recessive.
  • Acquired deficiency of Prekallikrein has also been reported for a number of conditions such as DIC, liver disease, Dengue fever and nephrotic syndrome.
• Treatment: No treatment necessary.
